Who needs an Indiana Registered Soil Scientist?
Property owners in Indiana need the services of an Indiana Registered Soil Scientist if they're replacing or repairing an existing septic system or constructing a new residence or commercial building that will utilize a septic system.
Do I need to be present when you perform borings?
It's certainly not necessary, but having the property owner on hand gives us a better idea of what your plans are for the property. We can also gather this information through phone calls and emails.
What permits are necessary to install a septic system?
Permits are required through the local health department prior to any installation of a septic system. As a soil scientist, we provide soil descriptions that are then reviewed by the health department. The department provides the minimum requirements based on the number of bedrooms.
What if I have a commercial property?
The process is the same and we will also furnish you with a pre-application to fill out and return to the Indiana Department of Health. That department will then provide a technical data sheet showing the minimum system design requirements. This typically takes 30-60 days.
Do I mark my utilities?
Indiana 811 is a free service and we will make contact with them and arrange for your utilities to be marked. Utilities typically can be marked within five days, but that time may vary.
What equipment do you use for soil borings?
We utilize a hand auger, which allows us to pull soil samples to a depth greater than 64 inches for new construction and more than 74 inches for repairs and replacements. Typically we perform three borings then furnish our written report to both you and the local health department.
Are borings the same as a perc test?
No. Perc tests are no longer utilized by Indiana health departments. Today, sites are evaluated by direct soil analysis by a registered soil scientist.
